Tailoring Safer Systems connects the findings of international research with experiences from consulting practice. The focus is on safety, risk, and human action in complex organisations.
What you’ll read here
Topics like safety culture, human factors, high-reliability organisations, learning from incidents, psychological safety, and risk management are often celebrated one-dimensionally in glossy brochures. In practice, they are more awkward, contradictory, and interesting.
This magazine treats these topics honestly, with respect for the research, and at a distance from buzzwords. It assumes that most solutions break under pressure when they don’t fit the organisation they’re supposed to work in.
Four formats rotate:
- Essays – longer articles on a concept or a question from practice
- Book and paper notes – reflections on sources that have shaped my thinking
- Lessons learned – anonymised observations from concrete consulting situations
- Commentary – short reactions to current discussions, conferences, events
Published every Monday. Deliberate breaks in summer and around the new year, instead of unannounced gaps.
Who writes
Earlier articles on this site are also by Carsten Busch, Christian Wilhelm, and Sifra Corver. These texts remain available and are kept with source attribution. Since the relaunch, only one author writes actively.

Tailoring Safer Systems is the magazine of safety & risk solutions GmbH, the consulting firm I run. Consulting and magazine are deliberately separated: consulting is the work, the magazine is the place where I think out loud.

Articles appear in German and English. The English versions are not literal translations but adapted versions. Some observations work better in one language than in the other.
Comments are deliberately absent from this site. Discussions happen on LinkedIn, where the readership is anyway. Each article links at the end to the matching LinkedIn post.
